Elba's first professional acting role was in Crimewatch UK in 1994. Since then, he has played prominent roles in TV shows such as The Wire, Luther, and The Big C. He has acted alongside many famous names including Viola Davis, Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron.
In the film industry he is best known for his roles as Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim (2013) and James Bond villain Krall in Star Trek Beyond (2016). He has also starred in a number of other films including A Hundred Streets (2016), Beasts of No Nation (2015), Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and American Gangster (2007).
Elba made his debut as a singer with the album Mi Mandela in 2014. He has released several other albums since then including Idris Elba Presents mi Mandela (2014), mi Mandela (2014) and mi Mandela (2014).
