The Hobbit (The Lord of the Rings) - Book
Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming hobbit who enjoys a peaceful life in the Shire, is thrust into a grand adventure when the wizard Gandalf arrives with a group of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. They are on a quest to reclaim their homeland, the Lonely Mountain, which has been taken over by the fearsome dragon, Smaug. Bilbo is reluctantly persuaded to join them as their burglar because Gandalf believes he has hidden courage and resourcefulness.
Their journey takes them through treacherous lands, including encounters with trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and the enigmatic Wood-elves. Along the way, Bilbo stumbles upon a mysterious ring that grants him the power of invisibility. This ring later proves to be of great significance in the wider Tolkien mythology.
The company eventually reaches the Lonely Mountain, where they face Smaug. With Bilbo's help, they manage to outsmart the dragon, but not without consequences. After Smaug's defeat, Thorin's greed for the treasure leads to a battle between the various races over control of the wealth.
"The Hobbit" is a classic tale of heroism and self-discovery, as Bilbo evolves from a timid homebody into a courageous adventurer. It's a prelude to J.R.R. Tolkien's more extensive "The Lord of the Rings" series, set in the same richly imagined world of Middle-earth.
