Nikos Kazantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis (28 October 1883 – 19 April 1957) was a Greek writer, philosopher, and poet. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine times. He is best known for writing Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, which were both later adapted into films.
Kazantzakis was born in Crete in 1883. He studied law at Athens University and went on to work as a lawyer and journalist before becoming a full-time writer in 1919. In 1903, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a journalist and began writing poetry. His first novel, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel was published in 1934; it was followed by Zorba the Greek (1946) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1960). The majority of his novels were written in Greek, but his most famous works have been translated into many languages including English, French and German. Kazantzakis died in 1957 at age 74; his final work was published posthumously as Report to Greco (1963).
