Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen, France, on December 12th, 1821. He is considered one of the greatest French novelists and is best known for his masterpiece Madame Bovary. Flaubert's writing style was meticulous and he paid great attention to detail, often spending days or weeks crafting a perfect sentence. He was also a perfectionist, and frequently revised his work multiple times. This attention to detail and perfectionism resulted in some of the greatest works of French literature. He wrote about a wide range of topics including politics and religion; however his most famous works were his novels—including Madame Bovary (1856), Sentimental Education (1869), A Simple Heart (1877) and The Three Musketeers (1844).
